We're No Stinkin' Outlaws — reflections

The hiccup in our giddy-up!

I was kicking so much butt at doing 90 blog posts in 90 days, but then I got to Denver, got a flu, got done with the trade show, got home, and got busy... with other stuff. It's no secret that small business is a big job -- we're in...

Who is Outlaw for?

We sometimes get questions about whether Outlaw is for men or women, and, call us modern, but we believe that anyone can smell like campfire at dusk, like warm leather, and like a fine bourbon. Outlaw's made for everyone, plain and simple. Sure, we have some more traditional scents like...

What are you living for?

One of our employees* was working across from the Twin Towers when the airplanes hit. Every year, she takes this day as a day of reflection on her life. What does she really want? What is she living for? What does it mean? Because it can all be gone in...

Cha-cha-cha changes!

Outlaw Soaps has been around for many years, and over that time, I've pretty much been the only person maintaining the website, writing the product descriptions, updating the photos, and, possibly most importantly, making all the design decisions in the company. In the past year, we've brought on some new...

Measuring What Matters

This week, I've been thinking a lot about measuring what matters. I read lots of business books, and this week's hit parade is Measure What Matters by John Doerr, so it'd be only natural for me to ponder how to measure the things that matter in our business. I also...

I get by with a little help from my gang

This week, I have been hella sick... and not just for a day or two, for a whole week! 7 days of feeling lethargic, cruddy, cranky, and blerghy. (so blerghy, in fact, that you may have noticed we didn't even send a newsletter last week) We've had many phases of...

The Jig is Up! I have somehow tricked everyone into liking me, and now they won't because I'm actually a terrible person...

... and other terrifying bedtime stories I used to tell myself. I'm listening to Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to your Biggest Challenges, which is the newest in my self-professed business book addiction. In the book, Amy Cuddy talks about "the imposter experience," which is the feeling that you somehow don't belong in or don't deserve accolades, job offers, promotions, scholarships, friends, etc. Apparently, this is not just a feeling that I have, it's kind of universal. So I'm going to write about it in the hopes that if you also experience this feeling, you will know you're not alone.

How to start an online store today and be making money tomorrow.

I'm about to let you in on a little secret: starting an online business is painfully easy. It's mind-bendingly easy. It's confusingly easy. "Confusingly easy, you say?" you say. "Is that even possible?" Yes, my friend. It's confusingly easy because I can't figure out why everyone isn't doing it. You don't need a fancy website, a business plan, or even a DBA. You just need figure out how to mail items, and then think of something you're really passionate about, whether that's vintage clothes, old books, handmade jewelry, or even crocheted bags of dicks. You know how to mail stuff? Holy soap, this is business is almost going to make itself!

Behold! The contents of my brain, spread out for you as if on a cracker, ready for you to consume!

I'm a huge fan of business and self-help books. Over the years, I have read quite a few of them. Since the next few days are a big time for deciding to start and/or learn new things, I figured I'd share some of the books I've read in the past few years in order of "must read" to "eh, if you're bored and have absolutely nothing else going on, clear out your belly button lint and then pick these up." These aren't affiliate links, but they are Amazon "Smile" links, so if you pick a charity, Amazon will donate part of the sale to the charity of your choice. See? You're already doing good! Because I want 2016 to be the best year of your life, I have bought a copy of How to Win Friends and Influence People to give away. Click here to enter the giveaway, which is run...

Countdown to Christmas: Day 5 - The end is near!

Ah yes, that weird feeling of driving off a cliff. I remember it from last year. At some point, the Christmas orders slow down as people realize it's probably too late to shop for Christmas presents online. Last year, we set that date at 12/21 and updated the web notification (that bar across the top) to say we were out of town through the end of the year, and then we left. We drove off our own cliff. At least, until the new year...
