The first attempt at making Fire in the Hole soap came on a weekend in May. I know this very specifically, because I wasn't camping that weekend, and it was our annual May Trip.
We had planned on going camping with friends -- one of those crazy weekends of drinking and shooting and lighting things on fire -- but it was our first year of Outlaw Soaps, and small business ownership being what it is, we couldn't see to drag ourselves away for the day-long drive to meet our friends in an obscure corner of the Mojave.
This is going to be a quick post, since I'm writing from Bruno's Hotel in Gerlach, Nevada. I think the population here is about 75, and 90% of those people are a stone's throw from this room.As you may have read, my friends and I come here frequently, but not frequently enough to be locals. We are going to a friend's bar b que later if the weather eases up (it's gale force winds, thunder storms, and torrential rain right now). It has been a great day and a half.
You may have read yesterday's post about the last time we went to our 4th of July camping trip.
As I said, this camping trip has a long tradition behind it, so here are some photos from my previous excursion in 2008.
My first dog, Diva, was still with me and in prime form, as you will see. She was a mighty and wonderful friend, and I still miss her. We had many adventures. She is the dog in my tattoo, which our logo is based on.
For many years, my friends and I went camping to a desert in Northern Nevada on a moderately regular basis. Since Russ and I have been working, we haven't been able to enjoy this passtime very often and it has been sad.
This year, however, we're shaking off our soap shavings and heading out to the same desert with a couple of our friends.
Because these aren't your neighbor's travel slides, I figured I'd share them with you. Hopefully you'll enjoy them...
Father's Day is June 15! Wondering what to get for Dad? Here are some great Father's Day presents to make Dad clean and happy! We'll even gift wrap it and enclose a custom note with whatever you want us to write. The Outlaw's Breakfast: Is your dad a rough-and-tumble...
My friends and I had gone on a camping trip to a dry lakebed just north of Ludlow, California. We had all arrived after sundown, with most of us arriving throughout the night. We had come here many times before, and it was a gloriously undisturbed place where we were free to do whatever stupid stuff we wanted to.
As usual, we brought firewood for a massive fire and many of us were enthusiastically throwing propane canisters and gas cans (yes, really) on the fire. More fire is better, right?
We were drinking beer, and maybe some scotch, as is our way. There was definitely a drunk front moving through the camp that night, with periodic showers of...
This is the first in a series of stories about the inspirations behind our soaps. Many camping stories have contributed to the scent profile of Fire in the Hole, our campfire soap, and this is one. We hope you enjoy these as much as you enjoy the soap inspired by them.
