"Moving always sucks." - my dad

Years ago, when I was in the middle of a particularly heinous move, I called my dad in tears, telling him that I couldn't do it. He shared with me the wisdom of those three words.

I'm pretty sure he didn't realize that he was imparting what would become an oft-repeated mantra over my lifetime. I have moved more than 30 times in 40 years. I have learned to travel light, but moving always sucks.

It's comforting to know that, even in the middle of the disappointment, elation, and general roller coaster of chaos, at least one thing is constant: moving. always. sucks.

This time, we're not just relocating ourselves, we're relocating the business. I'll post photos as we do the build-out, but here's a little preview of where we're coming from and where we're going to.

The Workshop (aka "Where the Magic Happens")

Before: (with Bacon Soap)

Now: (with my car)

The Packaging Area

Before:

Now:

(It's going in the same place)

The Fulfillment Area

Before:

Now:

(because of course the fulfillment area is the very first thing I set up)

It's very exciting, because as you can see, we have a lot more space to work with and now our fulfillment area and office (not pictured) are indoors instead of in a warehouse. Also, I don't have to go to a different floor to fix a cup of coffee or go to the bathroom.

Many people have cautioned against having our workspace in our living space, but Outlaw Soaps has always been a whole-life project for us. It is a joy to wake up and see the fruits of our labors all around us.

Thank you for being on this adventure with us!

I think this mantra will save many a headache! When we embrace your dad’s advice, we can have the 100% appropriate expectation!!! Congratulations on your new space!!!

I’ve moved the business twice now – first into our old location and then into our new one – and you’re right, it always sucks. I’m getting good at planning workflow, though, so that’s a plus – and I do like my new lab now, except I miss having a sink right in the work area. (On the other hand, now that the sink is in a back room, no one can see the gigantic mound of dirty dishes, so I count that as a win.)

Danielle,
This is so exciting! I can’t wait to see the progress!
Deep breath! :)

We moved our business this summer into a larger space. It was hard work but so worth it to have the space needed to move around! Stay focused on the goal, you’ll do great.
